Is the Keto Diet OUT?

I’m not one to speak for or against any particular diet, though I do have my opinions about fad diets, nutrition trends, wellness influencer marketing, and other “quick fix” solutions! My mission is to make sure you’re nourished, and I encourage an overall balanced intake. If you follow a certain diet, I won’t tell you it’s wrong, but I do have my personal views on diets like keto for a reason.

That reason is: it just won’t last.

Since the keto diet peaked in popularity, research on its long-term success has expanded. For example, some studies show improvements in insulin resistance for those on the ketogenic diet, meaning their bodies become better at regulating blood sugar. There have also been claims about weight loss, though no research has proven that keto leads to more weight loss than other methods.

Now, a few years after keto’s rise, people are realizing how hard it is to stick to long-term. It might seem easy at first when you’re motivated and excited, but eventually life happens, and that usually includes celebrations with carb-rich meals, or even just the desire for a sandwich.

There are also nutritional concerns with keto.

Nutrient deficiencies are possible because fatty foods aren’t the richest in vitamins and minerals. This is where you need your vegetables, fruits, and grains, which are heavily restricted on the keto diet.

Additionally, following a keto diet can lead to cardiovascular issues like high cholesterol, which can cause a host of other problems. I’ve personally worked with more than a few clients to help lower their cholesterol and blood pressure after consuming a diet high in saturated fats and processed meats.

So, is keto losing its steam?

I think it is. Maybe because it’s tough to maintain, or maybe people are experiencing negative health effects. Or maybe (hopefully) people are realizing the appeal of a generally healthy, balanced diet that’s more enjoyable—and inclusive of your favorite foods!
