Let’s start here by differentiating between nigiri sushi and maki sushi. Nigiri is a piece of fish laid atop a small amount of prepared sushi rice.
Maki is what we usually refer to as a “roll” that involves a seaweed wrapper, or a sheet of nori, along with the rice and whatever else we want in the roll.
In the last couple of years, I’ve learned how to make both of these types of sushi and one thing you absolutely need is TIME! The rolls take much longer to make and require a bit more skill, so today I am just going to share a quick tutorial on how to make nigiri sushi from home!
There are so many reasons to enjoy sushi at home rather than at a restaurant. You can find high-quality, sushi-grade fish at many markets with a little research and it is much less expensive than going to a sushi restaurant. And you don’t have to rush! Usually the process takes anywhere from 2-4 hours from start to the end of the meal, but it’s more of an experience to move slowly and enjoy the process! The more you practice, the better you get and the less time you need before you are enjoying your own sushi!
I cook a lot and I like to watch the videos on this channel to sharpen my skills and learn new ones. I discovered Helen’s YouTube channel when I was trying to work on my knife skills when cutting the salmon for nigiri. I’ve included videos below on making the sushi rice, cutting the fish and also shaping the nigiri pieces. Enjoy and have fun!
