Ditching the All-or-Nothing Food Mentality

Let’s tackle a common food mindset: the all-or-nothing food mentality. 

I want to start by having you think about the foods you consider as “shoulds” — the so-called healthy options like blueberries, spinach, eggs, broccoli, oats, and beans. Now, picture the foods in your “shouldn’t” list — those tempting treats like sweets, fries, and lots of cheese.

You might see these foods as two separate categories, but let’s change that perspective.

Picture yourself in front of a large board with 100 different foods randomly listed — no categories, just choices. From bread and pasta to raspberries and carrots, all foods are intermingled on this board because they are all in the same category: food.

Here’s a visual to help:

You’re not going to eat all of that today, but you have the option of choosing anything on the list.

When you realize that all foods are available to you every day, the fear and pressure of the all-or-nothing mindset start to fade. This shift allows you to make food choices based on what you truly want, not what you think you should or shouldn’t eat.

Eventually you’ll be able to make a decision about what you are going to eat based on what you want or need, not what you should or shouldn’t do.
