Fourth of July Cake Recipe

I know what you are thinking. I’m a trainer and I’m studying to be a dietitian. So why do I have a cake recipe on here? Well, two main reasons. First, I love cake. Second, I like to make a big dessert on a holiday because I think people tend to eat less of it overall. Say you are at a picnic and you’ve eaten your burgers, dog, potato salad, corn on the cob and pasta salad and you don’t possibly have room for any- wait, is that a dessert table?


Before you know it, a mini cupcakes, s’more, cookie and a brownie bite all wound up on your plate and you’ve eaten it all. With ‘mini’ desserts our mind tricks us into thinking that having a couple small things would surely be healthier than having a piece of cake. This is almost always not true. Since you immediately think that a smaller dessert is healthier, you might have two or three or maybe even four before you’ve surpassed the fat and calories you’d get from a slice of cake. In fact, a lot of the time I see my family members sharing a piece of cake or pie because just the fact it’s a whole cake and not a bunch of mini cupcakes makes it look more like it is, and they end up saving calories. It’s all mental! Here is a picture of my dog to convince you to make this cake.

A lot of people say they have trouble at night trying to control their after-dinner snacking because they tell themselves to have something small. Unsatisfied, they go back for another and another. To avoid overeating, go with what you really want and just have a little! I guarantee you’ll be more satisfied overall. Now, go make this patriotic cake, enjoy the Fourth of July and have a full piece!
